Lingual Tonsils

Tonsils are small round mass of tissues (usually lymphoid). And so lingual tonsils refers to the group of small lymphoid tissues located in the back of tongue especially in the posterior area of the tongue. Lingual tonsils often get infected and that situation is called lingual tonsillitis. In this infection the tonsils at the roots of the tongue get swollen. The people of age five to ten are more prone to get lingual tonsillitis. But people of any age can get lingual tonsillitis. The lingual tonsils themselves help to fight this infection. What they do is to prevent the bacteria and other viruses from going into the body through the throat and sinus. Lingual tonsils main job is to produce antibodies and thus acts as an immune system that fights the infections. Lingual tonsillitis is usually caused by bacteria or viruses that enter the mouth through food and water that are intake. When infected by such bacteria and viruses the lingual tonsils tends to get swell and inflamed. The very first symptom that is experienced by a person suffering from lingual tonsillitis is the soreness in throat. Later on that person can get affected by fever, cold, pain in ear, pain in muscle, pain in throat and in swallowing saliva, discomfort while eating and drinking, tastelessness of food etc. The color of the tonsils changes when infected. They tend to turn red. Also sometimes tonsils may have spots on them. These spots can be white or yellow in color. When a person gets lingual tonsillitis he/she has to bear the symptoms for four to seven days. The four basic treatment methods applicable for people infected with lingual tonsillitis are as follows.
The first and foremost method is to take a proper bed rest and avoid going to office and school during the disease. Secondly the person should make sure to drink a lot of water however uncomfortable it is. Water usually tastes sour during lingual tonsillitis. Thirdly the patient should gargle with warm water with a pinch or two of salt in it. If the patient is still not recovering by following these methods only then he/she should take help of doctor and take medicines prescribed by the doctor. Treatment of lingual tonsillitis is very necessary to avoid getting fever and cold in further stages. To avoid getting fever one can take a medicine called NSAID which is very effective in removing lingual tonsillitis. |
